3D Thingies
Here are some examples of the times I’ve used 3D software (Blender) to aid perspective and background in my 2D pieces. I’m not yet particularly proficient with them yet, so often I’ll just use simple shapes in order to create a base to draw on top of.
The 3D model I created in blender to allow me to explore different perspectives on the scene and choose which one worked best.
The work in progress where I put the colours and vague lineart down. It's clear that the shapes have become more detailed in the 2D piece, but the 3D is just a base.
The finished image. This took me about 3 hrs, but the 3D stage at the beginning allowed me to save time that I could later use in detail work.
— Inspiration from my novel for the piece below.
She’s here again. If she hadn’t been so clumsy in landing, perhaps I could have just convinced myself that it was just a bird - but the way she stiffly tucks her wings behind her, her balance uneasy on the balcony railing, gripped tightly under her talons- it’s uncomfortable, as if she doesn’t quite fit into her new set of bones.
“You don’t act much like a bird, you know.”
The composition development. I couldn't choose which angle to use to best capture the scene, so I made a few thumbnail sketches before settling on the bottom right.
The 3D base. The railing gave me some trouble, and even though it will most likely change in the finished piece, it was a good opportunity to practice.
Still a work in progress here, but the feel and composition of the piece is clear by this point. (6hrs ish)
